Naturist Holidays in Jamaica: Best Clothing-Optional & Au Naturel Resorts

Jamaica is a very good choice for a naturist holiday, especially if you are happy staying in a resort with its own clothes-free areas. Grand Lido Negril, Hedonism II and the Couples resorts all offer different versions of the experience, from traditional naturism to clothing-optional holidays.

If you are a first-timer visiting a naturist or clothing-optional resort in Jamaica, choosing the right option will give you the best experience, so let’s look at each below.

Is Jamaica Good for a Naturist Holiday?

Jamaica is an excellent choice if you want resort-based naturism with Caribbean weather and all-inclusive facilities, but it is very different from Cap d’Agde, where an entire village operates around naturism.

What’s the Difference Between Naturist, Clothing-Optional and Lifestyle Resorts?

Before booking a naturist trip to Jamaica, it is worthwhile understanding some key differences between the different types of holidays and vacations offered. Grand Lido and Hedonism II, for example, offer a very different sort of holiday experience to a resort such as Couples Tower Isle.

Naturist / au naturel
Grand Lido Negril is a great example of a traditional style naturist option in that if you simply enjoy being able to walk around and sunbathe in your birthday suit, then this is likely to suit you. The clothing-free and au-naturel resorts tend to have quite clear naturist etiquette rules, including rules on photography, respect for other guests, and the use of towels when sitting.

Clothing optional
At a clothing-optional resort or in a clothing-optional area, you generally have a choice about whether to wear clothes. That does not necessarily mean the whole resort operates that way, though. Restaurants, reception areas, and other public spaces may still have dress requirements.

Mandatory nude areas
Some resorts also have sections where nudity is expected rather than optional. Hedonism II is a good example: its clothing-optional side allows guests to choose, but once you enter the resort’s designated nude beach or pool area, the resort expects you to be nude. Clothing or cover-ups are required again in restaurants and certain other public areas.

Lifestyle-friendly
This is different again. “Lifestyle-friendly” is not simply another way of saying naturist. Hedonism II describes itself as both clothing-optional and lifestyle-friendly, with more emphasis on themed entertainment, nightlife and a lively adult atmosphere than you would normally find at a traditional naturist resort.

What Are the Best Naturist and Clothing-Optional Resorts in Jamaica?

Grand Lido Negril Au-Naturel

Best for: upscale, more traditional naturist holidays

Grand Lido Negril is probably the best option in Jamaica if you are a naturist looking for an adults-only resort.

This clothing-free resort is for anyone over 21, and it is in its own private oceanfront enclave in Negril. The resort is relatively small, with 26 ocean-facing suites, so it has a rather different feel from one of the huge Caribbean all-inclusive hotels. Singles as well as couples are welcome.

Catering to the luxury market, facilities include rooms with private balconies or terraces, in-suite Jacuzzi baths and 24-hour room service (depending on the room you book).

As a guest at the Grand Lido, you can also use the facilities at the neighbouring Royalton Negril and Hideaway at Royalton Negril. You do need to put clothes on before entering those resorts, but it gives you access to a much wider choice of restaurants, bars and entertainment without losing the privacy of Grand Lido itself.

This resort is a good fit if you want a comfortable naturist holiday rather than a party-oriented adult lifestyle resort.

If your idea of a good week is sunshine, sea views, good food and being able to relax nude without feeling that the whole holiday revolves around nightlife, Grand Lido is one of the first Jamaican resorts I would look at.

Hedonism II

Best for: lively clothing-optional holidays, nightlife and the adult lifestyle scene

Hedonism II is in Negril and is probably the best-known adult resort in Jamaica, but I would not describe it simply as a naturist resort. It is adults-only, all-inclusive, clothing-optional, and openly lifestyle-friendly, so the atmosphere is very different from somewhere such as Grand Lido.

Hedonism II has both clothing-optional and designated nude areas. According to the Hedonism II FAQ, guests can choose what to wear on the clothing-optional side, while full nudity is required in the designated nude beach, pool, and hot-tub areas. Cover-ups are required again in restaurants, the lobby, and certain other public areas.

The resort is lifestyle-friendly, with a strong emphasis on themed entertainment, nightlife, and so has a livelier adult atmosphere than you might normally find at a traditional naturist resort.

From our own experience, the standard of accommodation and organisation is very good, and there is usually plenty going on. That is part of the appeal, but it is also why I think it’s important to understand what Hedonism is about before booking it.

If what you want is a simple naturist holiday, Grand Lido is probably your best option. If you like the idea of being clothes-free but also want nightlife, parties and a much more adventurous adult atmosphere, then Hedonism II is likely to suit you far better.

Couples Negril

Best for: couples looking for a relaxed Negril holiday with an au-naturel option

Couples Negril is a good choice if you want a more romantic style holiday and resort, but where you still like the idea of spending part of the holiday clothes-free.

The resort has a fairly small, semi-private section near the main beach that is reserved for nude sunbathing, and there’s also a dedicated bar and jacuzzi in that area.

The Couples Resorts FAQ confirms that Couples Negril, Couples Sans Souci, and Couples Tower Isle all have designated au-naturel waterfront areas, although the facilities and layout differ at each resort.

The important thing to note when choosing this resort is that naturism is just part of the Couples Negril resort. Most of the resort caters to non-naturists as a standard luxury all-inclusive for couples. So as a guest, you can use the main beach, pools, restaurants, and activities as normal, but you also have the option to head to the au-naturel section when you want to.

That makes it quite different from Grand Lido. I would look at Couples Negril if you want a relaxed Caribbean holiday first, with naturism as one part of the experience rather than the main reason for going.

Couples Sans Souci

Best for: couples wanting the most substantial Couples au-naturel facilities

Couples Sans Souci, near Ocho Rios, has one of the more complete naturist areas within the Couples group.

Its Sunset Beach is set in a small private bay and includes the beach itself, a swimming pool, Jacuzzi, bar, and grill.

Sunset Beach is reserved for nude sunbathing in the daytime, and this is one of our favourite Jamaican resorts because of the wide range of restaurants, pools, spa, and activities of a mainstream couples resort, but the naturist area feels more substantial than a simple section of beach.

Couples Tower Isle

Best for: couples attracted by a private nude-island experience

Couples Tower Isle is really quite different from the other Jamaican resorts because its naturist area is on a small private island just offshore.

The au-naturel area is on the resort’s private island, around 100 yards offshore. A short boat transfer is provided by the resort, and once there you have access to facilities including a pool and swim-up bar.

The private-island setting is what makes Tower Isle different from the other Jamaican options. It is a good fit if you want a conventional all-inclusive resort for most of your holiday but like having a secluded au naturel area available during the day.

Negril or Ocho Rios for a Naturist Holiday?

If naturism is one of the main reasons you are coming to Jamaica, Negril provides the most options.

Grand Lido Negril is the most naturist-focused option, Hedonism II is the wildest and liveliest clothing-optional and lifestyle resort, and Couples Negril gives you a quieter couples holiday option.

Ocho Rios is different. Couples Sans Souci and Couples Tower Isle are both clothed couples resorts but with private naturist facilities as an add-on option, rather than being dedicated naturist resorts.

So the choice comes down to the sort of holiday you want.

Choose Negril if you want the widest choice of clothes-free resorts and want naturism to play a bigger part in the trip.

Choose Ocho Rios if you would rather stay in a romantic mainstream resort and use a private nude beach or island as one part of the holiday.

Are There Nude Beaches in Jamaica?

Yes, Jamaica has several beaches and waterfront areas for nudists, but they are mostly resorts. Examples include the au-naturel beach at Couples Negril, Sunset Beach at Couples Sans Souci, and the private island at Couples Tower Isle. Grand Lido Negril also has its own private clothing-free area, while Hedonism II has designated naturist sections.

Do not assume that naturism is acceptable on public beaches because it is not normally acceptable. Instead, your best choice is to stay in one of the main naturist resorts, or at least somewhere that is clearly designated as clothing-optional or naturist-permitted.

When Is the Best Time for a Naturist Holiday in Jamaica?

If you are mainly going for sunshine and want the best chance of dry beach weather, December to April is normally the best time to come here.

Jamaica has a tropical climate, and December to April is the dry season, while it gets rainier from May onwards. This makes the winter months especially attractive if you are trying to escape colder weather in the UK or northern Europe.

One thing to be aware of is the hurricane season. In the Caribbean, this officially runs from 1 June to 30 November. This does not mean that you should automatically avoid Jamaica during those months, but it is worth being aware of, and also having appropriate travel insurance becomes more important.

How Do You Get to Jamaica’s Naturist Resorts?

If you are looking to get to Negril, then the airport to look for is Sangster International Airport (MBJ) in Montego Bay. Sangster is suitable for both Negril and Ocho Rios, as well as Montego Bay.

For planning purposes, allow roughly:

• Negril: around 80 to 90 minutes by road from Montego Bay Airport.
• Ocho Rios: around 1 hour 45 minutes.

Some resorts include or arrange airport transport, so do check what is provided before booking a separate taxi or private transfer.

How Does Jamaica Compare with Cap d’Agde for Naturists?

Jamaica and Cap d’Agde offer two really quite different naturist holiday experiences.

In Jamaica, clothes-free naturist holidays are mainly centred around the idea of private resorts and designated nudist areas. You may be staying in a conventional Caribbean all-inclusive resort, with naturism available on a particular beach, beside a pool or in a separate private area.

Cap d’Agde Naturist Resort is very different because the whole village is naturist. Inside the Naturist Village, you can go a whole week without wearing any clothes, including when going shopping, on the beach, and out in the evenings.

There is also an important difference in when to visit.

Cap d’Agde is best between May and September, with July and August being the busiest and warmest months.

Jamaica is good at different times, with December to April the best time so that you have winter sun.

So we personally like Cap d’Agde in the summer and then Jamaica in the winter, so why not do both!
